Tips For Caring For Your Mattress
Proper care of your mattress increases its lifespan and you can sleep more nights on it before it has to be replaced and replaced.
If you do everything correctly when it comes to caring for your mattress, you will increase the lifespan of your sleeping pad and you can therefore also afford mattresses that may seem expensive at first, but are worth the money for a long time with the right care.
Things to know about caring for your mattress
The possible care of your mattress should already play a role when you buy it. Some mattresses do not have a removable cover, which only makes it difficult to care for your mattress and requires additional hygiene measures.
When buying, make sure that the mattress has a removable cover that is so robust and of high quality that it can withstand repeated cleaning and does not tear the zipper or the corners when you pull it off for the first time. If you buy cheap, you buy twice – or you will not enjoy your mattress for as long.
Today we explain to you how you can give your mattress a long lifespan with the right care!
Use a slatted frame
A mattress has to breathe – on both sides. During the night you lose a lot of fluid through your skin, which is absorbed by the mattress.
So that this moisture can dry off well and cannot lead to mold or other odor and health nuisances, it is important that the mattress can also “breathe” downwards. A slatted frame or similar construction that allows air to circulate ensures this.
Use a mattress protector
Some slatted frames are made of wood that has not been sanded down finely enough and has a somewhat rough surface. This can cause the mattress to be rubbed when moving in bed, so that the cover is damaged. Proper care of your mattress starts with what you put it on. If your slatted frame is rough, invest in a mattress protector that is placed over the slat.
Use a topper
To make the care of your mattress easier, you should always make sure that not too much dirt and body fluids get on the mattress and get into it. A mattress topper does this job and is easy to wash – provided it fits in your washing machine.
The topper should be made of a material that suits your sleeping habits. If you sweat a lot, a filling made of silk is an option; if you often freeze, a filling made of wool makes sense. If you like uncomplicated materials, opt for microfibre. In any case, the topper makes taking care of your mattress a lot easier because it protects it from soiling. Please wash it regularly!
Turn the mattress regularly
No matter what type of mattress you use, it is important to turn it over regularly. In this way you not only prevent hollows, this also serves to avoid stressing the material on one side and not always stressing the same place from moisture and pressure. Regularly turning the mattress extends the life of the mattress!
It is important that you turn the mattress completely, so not only turn the bottom up, but also turn the foot end towards the head end and vice versa. A good mattress should have sturdy handles on the sides to make this regular work easier for you. Turning the mattress once a month should be enough.
Thoroughly vacuum the mattress
Despite the topper, flakes of skin, hair, dust and other residues collect on the mattress, which are not only unhygienic but also popular food for house dust mites. Before you turn the mattress, you should vacuum it thoroughly to remove such residue.
Use a vacuum cleaner with as much power and high suction power as possible, a small hand-held vacuum cleaner is unsuitable. Vacuum all sides of the mattress as you turn it, and don’t forget the narrow sides. Check your bed for damage that could damage the mattress and keep an eye out for bugs such as bed bugs.
While you’re at it, vacuum under the bed, which is also where dust mites like to hang out . The mattress protector on the slatted frame also needs to be vacuumed regularly and cleaned occasionally, for example in the washing machine.
Let the mattress breathe
Make sure that your mattress has a chance to steam out and dry well after each night by pulling back the bedding and opening the window. This is the most important daily maintenance of your mattress, because moisture that remains in the mattress causes bad smells and mold!
What to do about stains
Did all the good advice fail and your mattress got stained, but you can’t wash the cover at the moment? Then you should remove the stains while they’re still fresh. Use diluted vinegar water and rub the stain with it until it disappears.
With the right care of your mattress, you will see that you will enjoy it for many long nights!
